Your project

Start with what you are planning. You can change anything later and the estimate updates immediately.

Project type

Not sure which fits? Examples:

  • — You are building or replacing the whole stair and want a modern look — for example a floating stair with cable or glass guards.
  • — The stair itself is fine, but the balusters, posts, or handrail are dated, loose, or missing.
  • — You have an open loft, mezzanine, or balcony edge that needs a guard, with no stair involved.
  • — Space is tight and the stair is a secondary route — to a loft, roof deck, or wine cellar.
  • — You need a stair from a deck, porch, or terrace down to grade or up to a roof deck.

How this planner works

The planner combines three things: concept geometry from your dimensions, a pricing model built from current manufacturer-published product ranges and editable planning allowances, and a list of the assumptions and unknowns behind the number. Each scope layer — stair structure, treads, railing, handrail, engineering, freight, site work, installation, permits, tax, and contingency — is priced separately so you can see where the money goes.

Specific selections narrow each line item. Undecided selections, missing measurements, specialty finishes, coastal exposure, and commercial settings widen it. Entering a ZIP code applies a coarse regional labor planning index; skipping it keeps a broader national range.

The geometry is a budgeting concept, informed by common residential model-code planning values. It does not check code compliance, confirm fit, or produce anything you can build from. Read the methodology, the code guide, and the sources.

Disclosure. Design My Stair & Rail is an independent planning and cost-estimation resource. We are not a stair manufacturer, railing manufacturer, metal fabricator, architect, engineer, contractor, installer, code official, or permitting authority. Estimates and geometry are preliminary planning information, not bids, engineered designs, fabrication drawings, or code approvals. Final dimensions, structure, attachments, loads, guards, handrails, openings, materials, permits, and installation must be confirmed by qualified local professionals and the selected product manufacturer.
